The recording and text of this service will be available shortly.

On the Sunday before Australia Day, Uniting Church congregations across the country hold worship services to reflect upon and lament the effect of the invasion and colonisation on First Peoples and our identity as a nation.

The observance of a Day of Mourning was endorsed by the 15th Assembly arising from a request of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress (UAICC).

Our congregation will also draw upon the concept of this day as ‘Aboriginal Sunday’ which began in 1938 as a call by Aboriginal Christian Leader William Cooper to churches asking them to set aside the Sunday before January 26th to speak about the plight of Aboriginal peoples. He went on to be one of several Aboriginal leaders of the Day of Mourning protest on January 26 1938, rallying for equality and full citizenship.

Our congregation has partnered with Aboriginal leaders through Common Grace to go deeper in listening to the call of Aboriginal injustice and to learn, engage, pray, and take action as a community. You are invited to join us as we use bible readings, prayers, songs and other resources provided by both Common Grace and the UAICC to go further on our journey of friendship and reconciliation, and invite you to come along as well. The service will be live-streamed on zoom here. No registration is required.
