We’re losing track of how many years we’ve been coming together for this community event! Pre-Covid, it was held in the depths of winter in a chilly church hall over a warming soup lunch. Following lockdown, we reconvened during a warmer time of year and have stayed with it every since! We are proud to host this annual event between the Sutherland Shire Amnesty branch and the congregation of Engadine Uniting. We provide the home-baked goodies for you to graze on a yummy morning tea while writing one or more letters. The event was held in the hall on Sunday morning after the church service.
We had a great time and wrote 202 letters in less than two hours together, with a pause for a group photo.
What is Write for Rights?!?
Amnesty International (Australia) tells us: “Sometimes a letter can change someone’s life. That’s the idea behind Write for Rights, our global letter-writing campaign. Twenty-one years ago, a small group of activists in Poland decided to run a 24-hour letter-writing marathon for 10 December – Human Rights Day. The idea took off and today, Write for Rights has grown into the world’s biggest human rights event.
Every December, supporters across the globe write millions of letters, cards and tweets, and sign petitions for those whose basic human rights are being attacked. These supporters form a vibrant community of people like you, continuing a long tradition of writing letters to right some of the world’s biggest wrongs.
Real change happens because of your letters and actions. People wrongfully imprisoned are released. Abusers are brought to justice. And people in prison are treated more humanely.” Read all about Amnesty “Write for Rights” here.
How it works: Amnesty members will kick off the event explaining the effectiveness of letter-writing and highlighting the individuals who will be the focus of the event this year. You are encouraged to enjoy the hot and cold drinks and snacks (including gluten-free options) that will be available while you are writing.
We will provide sample letters to give you an idea of what to write, and a team will be on hand to offer coaching and assistance as needed. Easy notes, handy hints, and short stories will be available to help you craft letters that express our support for prisoners of conscience around the world.
All paper and pens will be provided, and Amnesty Sutherland ensure that all the letters were delivered. Last year, we were thrilled to have written 285 letters in just 90 minutes!
