Sewing aprons with a theme of protecting Mother Earth from recycled and salvaged materials brought a group of us together in friendship and fun.
Inspired by the concept of Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle and the circular economy, this event is designed to save surplus materials from landfill by creating something practical: aprons.
The day brought together participants of varying sewing skills to craft aprons from recycled and scrap fabrics. in an enjoyable community based event of sustainability and creativity.
The atmosphere was lively and supportive, with seasoned sewers mentoring and assisting newbies, ensuring that everyone felt enabled to particpate at a level and pace that suited them. There were plenty of sewing machines, apron kits and support. Chatter was rife and laughter was heard often.
Throughout the day, we engaged in hands-on sewing, transforming old tablecloths or other discarded fabrics into functional and artistic aprons. This event wasn’t only about environmental consciousness; it also allowed for personal expression and creativity, although this author is a newbie sewer and was happy to get as far as cutting the pattern and usine a sewing machine. The opportunity to express their creativity will have to wait for the next Clothing the Loop event!
A simple create your-own-sandwich lunch was provided, giving people the opportunity to relax, socialise, and share their experiences. This simple communal meal further strengthened connections among participants, making the event a holistic and memorable experience.
The event combined education, creativity, and community spirit, encouraging participants to continue practicing sustainability in their daily lives.
