On Monday 4 August, several residents of the Cook electorate (most of whom are also members of Engadine and Gymea-Miranda Uniting Churches) met with their MP, Simon Kennedy, to express their concerns about climate change and to hear his views. Just a few days earlier, Mr Kennedy had been reported as speaking out in a meeting of the Coalition in support of retaining net zero targets when others had suggested abandoning them and we congratulated him on his stance which, he told us, was supported by many of his colleagues.
Mr Kennedy was presented with a “climate scarf” which was knitted by a member of the Engadine congregation. The scarf, created to a pattern from Christian social justice movement Common Grace, is a visual representation of the warming climate over the past 60 years. Similar scarves have been presented to other politicians in the NSW and Federal parliaments over the past few years.
Those who attended felt Mr Kennedy listened attentively to what we had to say and that he replied honestly in outlining his intention to continue to push for more effective measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by Australia.
