Wind, rain nor Covid could stop our enjoyment of the live acoustic-music night in our candle and fairy lit Basement at Engadine Uniting Church on Saturday night 26th March. This fun and fundraising night for Project Youth, a youth support and housing organisation in the Sutherland Shire, shook off our Covid blues with the Pete and Malcolm duo (2PM), locals from Heathcote and Menai. Pete and Malcolm (originally in the band, Cascade), have been creating original music for 50 years and their latest CD is called ‘Turning to Stone’. On Saturday night, together with their friend Ray who ensured an optimal sound experience, 2PM entertained the audience with their foot tapping harmonies and engaging lyrics.

During the interval we listened to Tash, a vibrant and positive young person with a clear vision and goals for her future, tell her story (video here) of how Project Youth has helped her navigate her late teenage years with support of housing, education and training and a job at Café Y, Menai. We also heard from Justin, a worker at Project Youth (same video, here) who gave us insights into the worthy work of Project Youth.

Project Youth is an independent Sutherland Shire charity that supports vulnerable young people who need support services in housing; education, employment and training; and early intervention. With over 50 staff and 50 volunteers, Project Youth provides 76 beds across semi-supported, transitional and independent housing to support and assist young people in the Shire to thrive, especially during the difficult Covid years.

Engadine Uniting Church has been supporting Project Youth for nearly 20 years with regular donations of non-perishable food items. This was the brainchild of a former church member who had the vision to seek a connection between Engadine Uniting Church and the wider community.   After some research the ‘Easy Project’ was found; the name later changed to Project Youth.

Not only was the warm and cosy night filled with beautiful live music, but our other senses tasted a scrumptious supper provided by our church members, and a visually pleasing ambience of fairy lights, candles and table decorations of cleverly arranged succulents. The evening was topped off by the wonderful generosity of all who attended and we raised over $1,100 for Project Youth.

But without the bighearted donation of the time and musical skills of Malcolm and Pete, the sound setup of Ray, as well as the wonderful volunteers of the church who reliably and brilliantly carried out their respective jobs, (Sue, Leanne, Karen, John, Robyn and Robyn, (yes 2 Robyn’s), Michael, Jo, Paul), the night could not have been made possible.

Project Youth said ‘We are so grateful that we have the support of Engadine Uniting Church. It’s incredible how you organised the event over the weekend and continually support us with groceries for young people.’
