(Formerly the “Clothing the Loop” Sewing Group)
Everyone is warmly invited to join the sewing group that meets weekly and monthly to help each with clothing repairs and up-cycling sewing projects to help keep fabric out of landfill. Thanks to generous donations of equipment, we now have eight sewing machines and an overlocker onsite, so you can even come along to learn how to sew! It’s also a time for socialising and afternoon tea.
When: The group meets 3-6pm every Thursday afternoon, and 2-5pm on the third Sunday of the month.
Where: in the Basement of the church – enter via the door to the left of the stairs.

The event is organised by members of Engadine Uniting Church but is secular in nature. The organisers find joy in sewing and are concerned about the amount of fabric waste. They wish to share their knowledge of sewing with others, to enable fabrics to be reused, repurposed and recycled.
We are now partnering with Marine Rescue NSW in a new exercise with the charity Uniforms 4 Kids – a venture that aims to save uniforms from landfill when our community sewing group turns them into evacuation bags, children’s clothes, hats, pencil cases, library bags, and soft toys for families in need. Marine Rescue have donated a quantity of good quality second-hand uniforms and we are upcycling them in many different creative ways. The completed items are distributed by the SES after disasters – for example, the recent floods which saw many people lose much of what they owned.
It’s very exciting and offers lots of “sewing for charity” opportunities to anyone who wants to join in. People are of course still welcome to come along and bring their own sewing projects for help and advice, or just to work on in the company of other sewers.

Another update: Conversion of the uniforms into clothes and pencil cases is well underway, with hats to come!
