At this online event organised by a volunteer team in the Sutherland Shire, member groups of Sydney Alliance (Sutherland group) asked candidates for election to the Sutherland Shire Council for commitments to increase the stock of affordable rental housing available in the Shire.

Local groups that are part of Sydney Alliance include: Gymea Community Aid, The Bosco Social Justice Group, Engadine Uniting Church, Project Youth, Advance Diversity Services, Jannali Uniting Church, the Georges River Presbytery of the Uniting Church, and others.

The event was being organised by the Sutherland volunteer team for Sydney Alliance. Similar events are being held in local government areas around Sydney in the lead-up to council elections (5th Dec) as communities gather to get council commitments to action about local issues.

What is Sydney Alliance? The Sydney Alliance is a diverse coalition of community organisations, religious organisations, unions and schools that uses the tools of community organising to make our city fairer and more sustainable. You can read more here.

What is Affordable Rental Housing?

In its simplest form, Affordable Rental Housing is any type of housing managed by a community housing provider and rented to the public at a below market rate (commonly 65- 80% of market rate). The only eligibility criteria is total household income (dependent on household size).

The Sutherland team of Sydney Alliance says, “We’re inviting candidates of the upcoming local council elections for the Sutherland Shire in December to make commitments to improve the availability of Affordable Rental Housing in our Local Government area.

These are the commitments that Sydney Alliance asked the candidates to make:

  • By June 2022, Council will implement updates to the Housing Strategy and Sutherland Shire LEP to specify how an Affordable Rental Housing target, ideally 10% of new development, will be delivered, measured, and monitored, in line with NSW State Government and Greater Sydney Commission targets.
  • Council commits to regular audits of all local Council land to identify suitable opportunities for the development of Affordable Rental Housing projects
  • Council agrees to establish an Affordable Housing Panel including Council staff and Community Organisations to:
    • Communicate with the community
    • Coordinate research and land audits
    • Identify specific opportunities for development that are suitable for Affordable Rental Housing.
    • Monitor the delivery of Affordable Rental Housing dwellings
